Well, the flight from Los Angeles to Hawaii is 5 hours, and the flight from NY to Los Angeles is about 6 hours, so depending on the headwind going, you can expect 10-11 hours. On the way back it should be shorter because there is a tailwind. I would suggest lots of movies, an Ambien to sleep 8 hours, a deck of cards, lots of magazines or books, a guide of things to do on Maui, a note pad to write letters to friends, etc. My vote is the Ambien (you take it, fall asleep, get an equivelant of a whole nights sleep, wake up, you're there and you're ready to hit the town)

12 - 14 hours is what you are looking at. There is no airline that flies non-stop from New York to Hawaii. You would have a layover in Minnesota, Detroit, LA, or Seattle before continuing on to Maui. Most airlines only fly direct to Honolulu from a hub city in the mainland. Unless you take Hawaiian airlines from a west coast city. Either way, you'll be looking at a connection.
