a flight from new york to puerto rico is about 5 hour long. I live in new jersey and i go to puerto rico all the time it always take me about 5 hours to get there.

The lenght of the flight from NY to PR could take 4 hours, but no more than that, not 5! Go to travelocity.com or any other website where you can check and you will see.

We went last summer from JFK to SJU, it was about 3.5 hours.

If the flight is direct with no stops then it will take from 4 and a half to 5 and a half hours. If there are stops then the trip will extend an hour and a half more due to the lenght of the stop over. I suggest you fly direct so as to avoid possibility of loosing luggage and avoid changing planes.
